Shangri-La Plaza is hosting the 18th Film Spring Festival on January 23-30, 2024. Get to watch several epic Chinese films at the Red Carpet Cinema. This is in partnership with the Ateneo Ricardo Leong Center for Chinese Studies, Ateneo Celadon, and Film Development Council of the Philippines, along with the Embassy of the People's Republic of China.
The six featured films at the 18th Spring Film Festival are:
The Captain, a gripping action thriller based on real-life Sichuan Airlines Flight 8633 incident. This film is directed by renowned Hong Kong Director Andrew Lau, and award-winning actor Zhang Hanyu in the title role.
Legend of the Demon Cat is a fantasy suspense film that follows poet Bai Latain and monk Kukai as they investigate the death of the emperor's concubine. What what makes the film exciting is when a demon cat appears and wreaks havoc in the city.
Based on popular Chinese folktale, White Snake delves upon a snake's yearning to be human and experience being in love. This animated film is a story about star-crossed lovers and the challenges they encountered.
Looking Up is a film about an astronaut that got stranded in space. Actor Deng Chao plays the title role and at the same time directed it. This film won at the 11 Macau International Film Festival for the Best Film award. It has also been featured at the 2019 Busan International Film Festival and at the 23rd Tokyo International Film Festival.
Full River Red is a thriller and mystery set at the beginning of Song Dynasty era. This has been one of China's highest grossing films in 2023. It explores themes of betrayal and patriotism.
The film, The Bravest, revolves around the story of several firefighters as they struggle to contain a huge fire after an oil pipeline explodes. This is based on the real-life Xingang Port oil spill incident.
The 18th Spring Film Festival also highlights the Chinese Painting Workshop by Master Fidel Sarmiento. This will be on January 27, 2024, 2PM at the Grand Atrium. Mall-goers can also enjoy the exhibit featuring intricate fans and scrolls.
There's also a special photo exhibit- Nihao, China at the East Atrium. This is organized by the Embassy of China.
