Digital Dementia and Sedentary Lifestyles

In 2012, German neuroscientist Manfred Spitzer coined the term- digital dementia, to describe how overuse of digital technology is resulting in the breakdown of cognitive abilities in a way that is more commonly seen in people who have suffered a head injury or psychiatric illness (source:

Dr. Gary Small recently explained his views on digital dementia and brain aging at the "A Smart Way to Healthy Aging: A Talk by Gary Small, M.D."

Also, in a research study conducted in South Korea, a "new cognitive condition has been discovered and afflicting people in their teens and 20's. It is called "digital dementia." It is said that people who rely heavily on technology may suffer a deterioration in cognitive abilities such as short term memory dysfunction. (source:

Dr. Gary Small, however, stresses that digital dementia is different from the old age dementia. Digital dementia he says, refers to the moments of forgetfulness that is usually experienced by people who use digital devices a lot. It can be not remember where the car key is, or what errands to do.

During the talk, Dr. Small stresses that aside from digital dementia, there are other health and nutrition related issues associated with sedentary lifestyles.

Herbalife, a global nutrition company has release their research findings that sedentary lifestyles can also lead to obesity and other related illnesses.

"With a majority of Philippines' workplace leading largely sedentary lifestyles, our mission as a global nutrition company is to help people in the Philippines take practical steps towards leading healthy, active lives. By inculcating positive nutrition and active lifestyle habits to people in the Philippines, we hope that this will, over time, help reduce obesity risks and lead to positive improvements to the well-being of our people," said Mr. Rosalio Valenzuela, GM of Herbalife Philippines.
