Bangkok is not just a city with lots of temples, shopping malls, street markets, and street food, it is a city with lots of surprises for those who loves the road less travelled.

During our recent trip to Bangkok, we spent an hour admiring and taking lots of pictures at the Airplane Graveyard Bangkok located at Krung Thep Maha Nakhon which is near Suvarnabhumi Airport.

TRAVEL: Thailand's Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall

Phra Thinang Ananta Samakhom or the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall was built in the early 1900's by King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). The original throne hall though (with the same name) was in the Grand Palace complex that was built by his father, King Mongkut (Rama IV). When the throne hall was finished, King Chulalongkorn had the old one demolished and adopted the name for the new one.  However, he wasn't able to see the completion of Ananta Samakhom because he passed away five years before it was completed. The architecture was patterned after the great European palaces of that time and was designed by a Prussian architect, and then by two Italian architects.

TRAVEL: Lost in Bangkok: Exploring Ratchathewi

It was only during our last day in Bangkok that I really got to explore and mingle with the locals. Prior to exploring Ratchathewi, I was with the Team Bangkok of Air Asia / Nikon Travel Photographer 2015. Bangkok is known as a shopping mecca, and land of temples but I know there's more.

TRAVEL: The Magnificent Grand Palace of Bangkok

The Grand Palace in Bangkok, Thailand is a complex of palaces and temples and is the residence of the Kings of Thailand. Remember the movie musicale- The King And I? It is similar to that since some part of the complex are along the river. I can just imagine Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr performing- Shall We Dance.

But the actual Grand Palace is nothing like that although the movie musicale was based on the memoirs of Anna Leonowens who worked as a governess for the King of Siam in the 1860's. Although it is such a vast complex, only a portion of it are open to the public since the royalties are still residing there.

TRAVEL: Team Bangkok Air Asia Travel Photographer 2015

Bangkok is one of the cities wherein there's a perfect blend of contrasts- the old and the new. The Grand Palace and temples have their own charms and I savor its rich history and culture. I also love its cityscape and amazing modern architecture.

And I think that this is also what the Air Asia Travel Photographer is all about since they've paired contenders with zero knowledge when it comes to DSLR's with professional photographers. The contenders are expected to capture photos in five categories: portrait, food, landscape, architecture, and a 9-photo collage that will tell a story about the city's culture.

TRAVEL: A Glimpse of Bangkok

Bangkok, Thailand is a place of many colorful and wonderful discoveries. It is not just elephants and temples as what we read in books. Exploring Bangkok became a reality for me when I joined Team Bangkok of The Air Asia Travel Photographer 2015. Together with TJ Nepumoceno (travel photographer contender), Raymond Cruz (Nikon photographer), Peter Frac (videographer), and representatives from Air Asia and Nikon, we went around Bangkok to capture its essence.
