Shangri-La Plaza Highlights Spanish Sports Films from May 23-26

Catch Spanish sports films at Shangri-La Plaza's Red Cinema from May 23-26, 2024.

With its continuous commitment to support quality films, Shangri-La Plaza teams up with Instituto Cervantes de Manila to host this year's Pelicula Spanish Film Festival which showcase sports films. This also coincided with the upcoming Paris Olympics this July 2024. 


Included in the lineup is Dias de futbol (Football Days). This 2003 film by David Serrano is about a group of friends reviving their childhood football team in an effort to know what its like to be on the winning end. A smash hit in the Spanish box office charts, the film is a poignant look at life in suburban Spain that addresses the fears of getting old. 

La gran familia espanola (Family United) by acclaimed director Daniel Sanches Arevalo is a 2013 comedy that look at the chaos between five brothers who reunites for a wedding on the day that Spain wins the 2010 World Cup Final. It combines two things that rule in Spanish homes- family and football. 

Campeonex (Championext) is a sequel to the 2018 film Campeones. It is Spain's entry for Best Foreign Language Film for that year's Oscar's. It followed a team of differently-abled athletes as they defied the odds to rise up through a basketball tournament, the recent film shows what happens when their coach accidentally enrolls them in a track and field competition. This Javier Fesser production continues to celebrate diversity and resilience with humor and heart. 

Completing the Pelicula Spanish Film Festival is Futbolin (Underdogs) by award-winning Argentine director Juan Jose Campanella. Released in 2013, this animated film features Amadeo, a shy and unassuming football genius who's unable to confess his love to his childhood friend, Lara. When their hometown is threatened by the football rival known as The Champ, who plans to turn it into a giant sports stadium, Amadeo, Lara, and a dismantled football team must unite to save their beloved village.
