Philips: Using LEDs To Save Energy

Philips recently launched the #MayMagagawaKa Campaign in the wake of the looming energy crisis in Luzon due to the temporary shutdown of Malampaya Power Plant. In line with this, a rotational brownout will be implemented in every district according to the Department of Energy (DOE) in the Luzon Grid. This is to distribute electricity (and saving some) while maintenance is on-going at Malampaya.

"A power outage can be catastrophic for the economy. We lose the comfort of our homes and the stability of livelihood and business," said Fabia Tetterro-Bueno, Country Manager of Philips Philippines. "It will impact all sectors- consistently, it will take the unified efforts of all these sectors to prevent it from happening in the future."

Aside from the energy crisis, saving energy is also an environmental concern that is also related to climate change which we, as well as the rest of the world is experiencing right now. "Lighting alone accounts for almost a 5th of global energy- equivalent to 1.9 billion tons of carbon emissions every year.

Because of progress, "we are consuming way beyond our limits,"said Joel Palma, WWF President and CEO. "Saving energy is one way to help manage this deficit, and with most energy coming from fossil fuels, less consumption of energy means lesser production of greenhouse gases- thereby lessening impact on climate change."

It is not only businesses and companies who will be affected by energy crisis but everyone of us. As part of #MayMagagawaKa campaign, Philips launched a series of online videos in both Facebook and YouTube last month that features testimonials from Filipinos, whose lives were or would be greatly affected by power outages.

To help promote #MayMagagawaKa campaign, Philips teamed-up with Team Manila to create limited-edition shirts for the campaign. Supporters of the campaign can get the shirt for free with every purchase of LED lights in participating stores. The shirts will also be given away as exclusive prizes in an on-going FB contest in the Philips LED PH page, and also during the annual Philips switch-off event for Earth Hour with WWF.

The campaign also aims for consumers to be more responsible by practicing smarter energy choices that will make a genuine difference in power conservation. This is a call to use the right LEDs because it can really make a difference on your electric bill. Of course, the right LEDs is also synonymous with having international standards of safety and performance. Hence, these are value-for-money LEDs.

"The #MayMagagawaKa campaign will run throughout the year and it is an advocacy that we are intending to sustain in the long term. Together, we can prevent the lights from fading on the Philippines' promising growth story," Tetteroo-Bueno concluded.
