8th World Autism Awareness Day

SM Cares along with Autism Hearts Philippines marked the 8th World Autism Awareness Day with a celebration at the SM Mall of Asia that also includes a "Lighting It Blue" event at the Globe.

The Philippines celebrated World Autism Awareness Day on April 6, although other countries marked the event last April 2. This year's theme- Employment: The Autism Advantage, aims to empower companies in working hand-in-hand with adults with autism by offering them jobs.

"Research suggests that employers are missing out on abilities that people on the autism spectrum have in greater abundance that 'neurotypical' workers do- such as, heightened abilities in pattern recognition and logical reasoning, as well as a greater attention to detail."

Also working hand-in-hand with Autism Hearts Philippines is Unilab Foundation. Thru Unilab Foundation's support, the pina artworks of artists with autism Nick Huang, Nina Bantoto, Daniel Sanchez, Vico Cham, and Ralph Sy will be turned into lovely dresses. The dresses will then go on-tour here and abroad and will showcase the talents of persons with autism. It also aims to promote autism awareness.

The event also featured Filipino Fashion Arts Autism Benefit. Children with autism will design some pina-cloth which will then be included in a fashion show by Filipino-American designer Anthony Legarda.

On this note, I'd like to share from experience that I have some friends who have children with autism. It is thru their proper guidance, patience, and love that their children are able to mingle well in our society. I know it may be a daunting task at first especially for new parents with children with autism but there are so many groups, foundations now that are very supportive of the autism awareness advocacy.

After sunset, the group proceeded to the Globe in front of SM Mall of Asia for the "Light It Up Blue" ceremony. Selected children with autism also performed during the short program before the lighting ceremony.
